PY eligibility is attested by the internal Examination Office for Human Medicine (D. Comberg) for students of the so-called Modellstudiengang – the reformed, model course of medical study introduced in WS 2003/04 and now attended by all Cologne students.

According to Section 1(2) sent. 1 no. 1 of the Regulations governing the licence to practice medicine (Approbationsordnung für Ärzte – ÄAppO), the Practical Year is completed in the final year of medical training and is divided into the following three 16-week training periods (tertials):

• Internal Medicine
• Surgery
• One of the remaining Clinical-Practical Fields (other than the two mentioned above)

You can obtain further information on the procedure in the Distribution Regulations (Verteilungsordnung) governing the allocation of students to the Academic Training Hospitals (ALKs) and the University Hospital. The pertinent attachments include lists of the elective courses offered at the ALKs and specify the PY commencement dates.

Forms in which the individual clinics/departments of the academic teaching hospitals present their PY training programmes.

Single tertials or the entire Practical Year may also be served abroad in the medical institutions cited here. Specific queries concerning the Practical Year abroad are answered by the NRW State examination authority, the Landesprüfungsamt; tel. +49 211 4584-718/719.
